The 77th Anniversary of the Paralympic Movement: A Story of Willpower, Hope, and Equality

According to the Public Relations office of the Federation and quoting the National Paralympic Committee, today, July 29, marks the 77th anniversary of the birth of the world’s most inspiring sports movement — the Paralympic movement.

This movement began with the innovative act of Sir Ludwig Guttmann, a doctor who recognized the effectiveness of sport in the physical and mental rehabilitation of wounded World War II veterans. By organizing the first Stoke Mandeville Games in England in 1948, he laid the foundation for the Paralympic movement.

Since 1960, when the first Paralympic Games were held in Rome, up through the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, 17 editions of the Summer Paralympics have taken place. Each edition has been more magnificent than the last, successfully creating equal opportunities and showcasing the abilities of people with disabilities to the world.

The Paralympic movement is a beautiful demonstration of the power of will and belief — a belief that today inspires millions globally and has transformed the sweet dream of countless individuals of every race, color, gender, and every level of physical, sensory, and intellectual ability into reality.
