Iranian Innovations at the Heart of the Asian Paralympics: Special Report from the APC Medical and Sports Science Committee Conference

At the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) conference, attended by officials and representatives from global federations, the President of the International Paralympic Committee, the President of the Asian Paralympic Committee, and Asian Paralympic guests, Dr. Jalil Koohpayeh Zadeh—President of the Federation and Head of the APC Medical and Sports Science Committee—introduced leading Iranian innovations and programs in disability sports during his keynote.

According to the Public Relations office of the Federation, Dr. Koohpayeh Zadeh expressed gratitude to Majid Rashid (President of the APC) and Andrew Parsons (President of the International Paralympic Committee) and emphasized the importance of advancing education in disability sports. He announced the launch of five educational webinars at the Asian and global level, which will continue on a monthly basis until the end of 2026, aiming to raise athletes’ and coaches’ knowledge and skills.

In addition to education, Dr. Koohpayeh Zadeh highlighted critical research projects:

The launch of the APC journal

Efforts to create an Asian branch of the VISTA international database to facilitate the publication of scientific articles and specialized research in disability sports across Asia.

A highlight of his presentation was the introduction of three key, pioneering innovations poised to transform the Asian disability sports landscape:

1. Electronic Health Records (EHR) for Athletes
Dr. Koohpayeh Zadeh explained that this system has been fully designed and implemented in Iran and is ready for deployment across Asia. The EHR system allows for easy registration and access to medical and health histories of athletes, greatly improving care and health management.

2. Registration Athletes Information (RAI) System
This intelligent platform is designed for comprehensive collection and management of athlete data throughout Asia. Beyond just data gathering, the system is capable of identifying potential talent, aiding coaches and federations in planning and improving athlete performance. Dr. Koohpayeh Zadeh confirmed that RAI is now ready for use and can serve as a critical tool for the development of disability sports.

3. Sport for the Disabled at Home (SDH) Project with Artificial Intelligence
One of the most attractive innovations, this project utilizes AI to provide an automatic coach or custom trainer for each individual with disabilities, enabling them to exercise and stay active at home. Through modern technology, the system delivers intelligent, individualized training programs. This initiative helps increase access to sports, promotes independence for athletes with disabilities, and offers a new model for disability sport.

These initiatives received strong support from international and Asian Paralympic committee leaders. Dr. Koohpayeh Zadeh expressed hope that the innovations would soon be implemented throughout Asia, further advancing the field of sports for veterans and people with disabilities.
