Soltani: Securing a World Quota Has Become More Difficult / Invited to a Tournament in Turkey

Behrouz Soltani, head coach of Iran’s national wheelchair basketball team, announced that the team has been invited to an international tournament in Turkey featuring prominent teams.

According to the Public Relations of the Federation , in an interview with Tasnim Sports News Agency, Soltani stated that new players were tested in previous training camps to evaluate their physical and technical conditions. The same approach continues in the current camp to inject fresh talent into the national team for upcoming events.

He added that a separate training camp is being held for the national 3×3 wheelchair basketball team, with some players shared between both teams. Those players will focus on supporting the 3×3 team and will not participate in the main camp simultaneously.

Regarding the Asian Championship scheduled for November in Thailand, Soltani called it the most important event of the year, as it offers qualification spots for the World Championship and the Para-Asian Games. He emphasized that securing a world quota is now much tougher, with only two direct spots available for Asia compared to four in the previous cycle. Additionally, two other teams can compete for a second chance in a repechage event in Europe.

When asked about preparatory matches, Soltani confirmed an invitation from Turkey to participate in friendly games in September. This tournament will feature strong teams, providing a valuable opportunity to test the team’s readiness.

The ultimate goal is to secure one of the two world championship quotas at the Asian Championship and ensure peace of mind for the team’s future competitions.
